How Not To Sell SEO Services
I recently received an email from and SEO who tried to sell me his services. Within 20 seconds I could tell that he scraped for my email and sent me an automated email. The website he found my email on was one of the very first websites I build. This is back when I did not understand that ranking for keywords no one searches for like “stop car pollution” is worthless. I thought I can use SEO to help the planet, boy was I wrong. You have to give people what they want and rank for things like “remove drm” and “ameriprise complaints” to make any profit. Because I had put so much time and energy into my little www.Carfartz.com site I decided to keep it around and use it to conduct SEO experiments. Never in a million years did I think someone would try to sell me services for such a POS site.
Read on to see his email and why it sucks.
” Dear Website Owner,
If I could get you five times the RELEVANT traffic at a substantially reduced cost would you be interested? National Positions can place your website on top of the Natural Listings on Google, Yahoo and MSN. Our Search Engine Optimization team delivers more top rankings than anyone else and we can prove it. We do not use “link farms” or “black hat” methods that Google and the other search engines frown upon and can use to de-list or ban your site. The techniques are proprietary, involving some valuable closely held trade secrets. Our prices are less than half of what other companies charge.
I would be happy to send you a proposal using the top search phrases for your area of expertise. Please contact me at your convenience so I can start saving you some money. Please do not hesitate to email or call me if you would like further information.
Sincerely,
Joseph Shetzen

Here is why this letter sucks.
1. Dear Website Owner - My name is blatantly on the website, you can take the time to write it in.
2. The body of the letter doesn’t match the intro or the contact information
3. Who uses All Caps in a formal letter?
4. I like how he mentions proprietary technology just to follow up with our prices are half of our competitors.
5. My area of expertise is SEO and I can tell that it isn’t yours.
Has SEO sunk this low? Where we have to spam web site owners with our services. I know that Walmart offers SEO, and I know most SEO is done by oversees non native English speaking people, but still… this is a new low in my book.
